Online Evangelism

As a Christian, you know the importance of sharing your faith with others. We are called to share the good news and to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).

While there are many creative ways to share the gospel, online evangelism is a great way to share your faith with others around the globe in a convenient and accessible way. Thanks to the internet, you can connect with people worldwide and participate in Jesus's teaching to participate in evangelism: sharing your beliefs, thoughts, and experiences. But let's be real - it can be challenging.

It can take time to figure out where to start. So here are some tried and true standards for sharing the gospel in the internet age:

  1. Bogging: Use your blog or website to share what God is teaching you, your learning from trusting Him, or your thoughts on a specific passage of Scripture. Share meditations you've experienced in nature, in the workplace, with your family, in your calling, around your neighborhood, or in your everyday life.
  2. Social media: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are ways to micro-blog and connect with others. Participate in online Christian communities, encouraging fellow believers (we all need one another to remember to believe in the good news in our situation). Use the YouVersion Bible app to create images from Scripture to share, being sure to comment on how you see it applying to your life, the lives of those around you, and society at large.
  3. Online courses and classes: Many churches and religious organizations offer online courses and classes that help people learn more about the relevance of the Bible as the only standard for life and living. Jump in and connect with others, sharing what God has done in your life.
  4. Podcasts and videos: Audio and video versions of all the above bring the personal connection and a human touch to what you're sharing, allowing your subscribers to connect on a deeper level that can be hard to do simply through written messages.

But the possibilities for online evangelism are only limited by your imagination. So here are some more fun and creative ideas to get your juices flowing:

  1. Start a Bible study group on social media: Create a group on Facebook; establish a hashtag on Instagram; host a Tweet chat where you can discuss different passages and learn from each other. Choose a book of the Bible to read and discuss together or follow a devotional together. Read a book on some aspect of Christian living or even sharing your faith and discuss it at set times. Be noble Bereans with anything extra-Biblical you read together, ensuring you align your discussions with the authentic text of Scripture.
  2. Share your faith through art: Do you love to draw, paint, quill, sew, sculpt, or create other art forms? Use your talents to create art to share your faith with others. Just remember that it doesn't have to be overtly Biblical for God to use the beauty of your creations to instill His hope in others.
  3. Create a Christian comedy podcast: Start a Christian comedy podcast where you can share your faith in a fun and lighthearted way. Many Christian comedians express their faith through their comedy while poking fun at some idiosyncratic ways Christians sometimes behave.
  4. Write Christian-themed flash fiction: Flash fiction is a short form of storytelling perfect for sharing on social media, your blog, or reading aloud on your podcast. Jesus spoke in parables, and so can you. Write short stories within a Biblical worldview, express a creative way of tying Biblical teaching into modern life, or explore what life may have been like for Biblical characters apart from what Scripture tells us directly.
  5. Sign up and learn how to be an online mentor: Prison Fellowship and others train volunteers to mentor prisoners who have come to faith while incarcerated. Or start a mentorship for students looking for an online connection in a physical world that is hostile to the gospel, both in your own country or abroad.

As you're thinking about creative ways to share your faith through online evangelism, remember your most important evangelism tools: your faith, your ears, and your story. And the best way to share the good news is by making it personal to you, inviting and letting the Holy Spirit give you the words to speak, the stories to tell, the art to create, the wisdom and hope and joy to share.

Jesus said many times during His earthly ministry: "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." As a walking, living, breathing temple of the Holy Spirit, you bring the kingdom of heaven with you wherever you go, whether IRL or online. Let your light shine before those God brings into your life and leave it to Him to bring them into a relationship with Him so that they glorify your Father in Heaven.
